The flat, unglazed underside has a very small circular ventilation hold under the figure. The low rectangular base has an asymetrical point at the front, and rises up at the back into a heap of rocks which supports the figure. The top of the base is decorated with applied leaves, two mauve flowers with yellow centres, and a yellow flower with a mauve centre. The youth steps forward on his right leg and has his left behind him. He stoops under the weight of a huge cream wicker basket filled with buff-coloured oval loaves, which he supports with his right hand. His left is by his side holding three brown wooden tallies on a string. He has pale greyish- brown hair partly hidden by a white stocking cap, and wears a white shirt, a three-quarter-length pale mauve coat with gold buttons, green breeches almost totally concealed by a long white apron, white stockings, and black shoes with gold buckles.
