Stoneware, moulded, inlaid in black and white slip, and celadon glazed. In the centre, four peonies are inlaid in black and white slip around a small chrysanthemum medallion, and enclosed by a border of rings and a band of lotus petals. Bands of key-fret are inlaid in white slip on the sides of both box and cover. Both parts are fully covered with a bluish-green glossy celadon glaze except for the rims. The clay body is thick and the almost flat base shows three fairly large quartzite spur-marks and a rough patch where the piece touched the saqqar.
