Hollyhock with an insect, by Antoine du Pinet

An image of Althaea hirsuta. Hollyhock with an insect. Album containing a dedicatory sonnet and 48 drawings. Pinet, Antoine du (French, op. c. 1584). Each of the drawings is framed by a border of gold paint of varying size according to the depth of the painted area. The drawings on white laid paper, watermarked with a bunch of grapes are bound into an album with a contemporary gold-tooled limp vellum cover bearing the arms, recto and verso of Louise of Lorraine (1553-1601). This, in turn, is bound into an eighteenth century French red morocco gilt binding. The spine is lettered in gold (see 'inscriptions/marks'). Each of the drawings is framed by a border of gold paint of varying size according to the depth of the painted area. Blank ff not detailed elsewhere. Height, sheet size, 204 mm, width, sheet size, 139 mm.
