The figure is supported on a square straight-sided base which is hollow and glazed underneath and has a large and a small ventilation hole. Apollo stands facing towards the viewer with his left foot raised on the second of a pile of three books on the right of the base. His head is turned slightly to his right and he holds a lyre in his left hand and has his right over the strings. He has red lips and pink cheeks, and has a green wreath over his long brown hair which flows down over his shoulders at the back. His sandals are black and he wears a long white cloak decorated with red and black floral motifs and circles of black dots, and is lined with yellow. His lyre has yellow frame and a black base; the books have brown bindings and pale turquoise fore edges; the lowest book has 'Vol/I' in white on its spine; and the base is marbled overall in shades of grey. Thomas Lakin and John Ellison Poole entered into partnership in Burslem in 1791, and in 1795 were joined by Poole's brother-in-law, Thomas Shrigley. Thomas Lakin withdrew from the partnership in January 1796 and a year later the other partners were declared bankrupt.
