It is one of many decorated with blue dashes round the edge, known to collectors as 'Blue Dash Chargers'. The Temptation of Adam and Eve was one of the most popular subjects for the decoration of these dishes which were made from the 1630s. On this example dating probably from the 1720s or early 1730s, the couple are depicted wearing short skirts made of leaves, which suggests that they had already eaten the forbidden fruit and become aware of their nakedness. Eve, however, is shown reaching up into the Tree to take a fruit, perhaps an indication of the difficulty of refraining from enjoyable sins, or simply because the painter put skirts on the figures for modesty's sake, and forgot that this did not strictly follow order of events in the bible story.."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-121036","uid":"adlib-term-121036","uuid":"d94c6987-b658-37d7-a4c1-f5da804d2e40"},"summary_title":"18th Century, second quarter"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-107736","uid":"adlib-term-107736","uuid":"e93a8dd1-d76d-320b-be9b-afa352e322a1"},"summary_title":"George II"}],"places":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-106700","uid":"adlib-term-106700","uuid":"a1f742d5-f39a-3ac4-9905-3f2c8bdf3612"},"hierarchies":[[{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"England"}],"summary_title":"England","type":"country"}]],"note":[{"value":"possibly"}],"summary_title":"Bristol"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-113529","uid":"adlib-term-113529","uuid":"5898861a-6410-3868-bc4e-ca25f0921043"},"hierarchies":[[{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"England"}],"summary_title":"England","type":"country"}]],"note":[{"value":"possibly"}],"summary_title":"Brislington"}]}]},"materials":[{"note":[{"value":"buff"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-42861","uid":"adlib-term-42861","uuid":"5b368285-f1a8-3dcf-a5b2-637fd3c3956c"},"summary_title":"earthenware"}},{"note":[{"value":"white"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-39575","uid":"adlib-term-39575","uuid":"cdf6707a-1eeb-3622-a26b-6e54f1f8d4ab"},"summary_title":"tin-glaze"}}],"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","units":"cm","value":"34"},{"dimension":"Diameter","units":"in","value":"13 3\/8"},{"dimension":"Height","units":"cm","value":"7.4"},{"dimension":"Height","units":"in","value":"2 7\/8"}]},"multimedia":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"media-170112","uid":"adlib-media-170112","uuid":"ae42ca5e-e09d-35c8-9952-d2fc9cdc32c4"},"processed":{"large":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa27\/C_1618_1928.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":760},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":591}]},"modified":1742595051422,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"mid":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa27\/mid_C_1618_1928.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":643},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":500}]},"modified":1742595051422,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"original":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa27\/C_1618_1928.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":760},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":591}]},"modified":1742595051422,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"preview":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa27\/preview_C_1618_1928.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":321},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":250}]},"modified":1742595051422,"resizable":true,"type":"image"}},"sort":"0","type":{"base":"media","type":"image"}},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"media-37150","uid":"adlib-media-37150","uuid":"7faf7bee-d070-39c6-aaae-930bd8ef97b7"},"processed":{"large":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa5\/C_1618_1928_283_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":740},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":570}]},"modified":1742582619928,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"mid":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa5\/mid_C_1618_1928_283_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":649},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":500}]},"modified":1742582619928,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"original":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa5\/C_1618_1928_283_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":740},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":570}]},"modified":1742582619928,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"preview":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa5\/preview_C_1618_1928_283_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":325},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":250}]},"modified":1742582619928,"resizable":true,"type":"image"}},"sort":"1","type":{"base":"media","type":"image"}}],"name":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-90855","uid":"adlib-term-90855","uuid":"b48207ec-774d-3e3e-8ab3-536996bc5dac"},"summary_title":"dish"}},{"value":"charger"}],"note":[{"type":"history note","value":"unknown before Dr J.W.L.
