Painted overglaze in pale yellow, flesh pink, pink, red, purple, brown, and black enamels, and gilt. The partly glazed underside has a central circular ventilation hole, and four large patchmarks. The roughly oval, shaped base has at the front two upward scrolling feet, separated by a downward scroll or wave motif, and is almost flat on top. Wilkes stands on the viewer's right of the base with his right knee relaxed, his left hand on his waist, and his right resting on top of a rectangular pedestal, on which is a sheet of paper inscribed 'BILL OF RIGHTS', and a scroll inscribed 'MAGNA CARTA'. A putto is seated in front of the pedestal, holding up a cap of Liberty on a stick in his left hand, and steadying a book with his right hand. Wilkes is undecorated apart from his naturalistically painted face, a black bow on his queue, gold borders and bows on his jacket, breeches, and shoes, and a pink cloak. The putto has a pale yellow drape, and a brown stick, and the book is red. The inscriptions on the scrolls are in purple. The pedestal has gilded borders, and is inscribed on the front in gold, 'Ino./WILKES/Esq.r' in gold. The scrolls on the front of the base are picked out in gold.C.3076-19281accession numberC.3076-192843394priref43394old object number4500urihttps://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/43394https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/43394referenceagent-149638adlib-agent-1496387376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8The Fitzwilliam MuseumDr J.W.L. This does not appear on the Fitzwilliam's example because the book has been restored. Rackham notes that the model was 'Similar to a portrait in the National Portrait Gallery, no. 284'.74referencepublication-1013adlib-publication-1013e6774d16-9d42-373b-a20c-90a966447f48Victoria and Albert Museum Department of Ceramics, Catalogue of English Porcelain, Earthenware, Enamels and Glass collected by Charles Schreiber Esq., M.P., and the Lady Charlotte Elizabeth Schreiber, and presented to the Museum in 1884, Volume I, PorcelainRef. This model is E45 in Bradshaw's list of Derby figures, see p. 110, E45. Bradshaw gives a resumé of the Wilkes affair on pp. 89-91. This model issued about 1764, was derived from a portrait by Nathaniel Dance. Another version with the mace of office on the base was issued after 1774 when Wilkes became Lord Mayer of London.

Lippert suggests that the source for the model was probably a mezzotint possibly by John Dixon, published by Robert Sayer, about 1764-9, of which there is an example in the National Portrait Gallery, see pp. 139-42, under no. 28, on p. 139, fig. 29. The mezzotint shows Wilkes slightly cross-eyed, and the model at Indianapolis also has a slight squint.139-42referencepublication-2609adlib-publication-260924853083-2c1a-3ead-ab5d-550c2b3f35fcEighteenth-Century English Porcelain in the Collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Artreferencepublication-200001817adlib-publication-200001817ee1ea50a-363a-3324-a9c3-13a1d0281bc6English Ceramics at the State Hermitage Museumreferenceterm-9010adlib-term-9010ecd03def-5d2a-3b43-bb92-76be16fbabf6Rococoobject namereferenceterm-110544adlib-term-110544c2286dfb-3d34-3089-a082-0b2bec0c2a5cquillliteralquillquillreferenceterm-107454adlib-term-1074546ca0f2ab-c1f8-329d-8a45-8f1322f53a20figurefiguresoft-paste porcelain, slip-cast, covered in bluish glaze, which has pooled where it lies thickly, and has crazed, painted overglaze in pale yellow, flesh pink, pink, red, purple, brown, and black enamels, and giltreferenceterm-120096adlib-term-1200967cc05306-f07e-3189-849f-52addb9e2ca7slip-castingJohn Wilkes (1727-1797)object
