Kameido umeyashiki, by Utagawa Hiroshige

Image attached to P.3562-R

An image of Kameido umeyashiki. Hiroshige, Utagawa (Japanese, 1797-1858). Colour print from woodblocks, with mica (kira). Ôban. Signed: Hiroshige ga. Publisher: Uoei (Uoya Eikichi). Date seal: Snake 11 (11/1857). Censor’s seal: aratame. 1857. Ukiyo-e. Notes: No. 30 from the series Meisho Edo hyakkei (One hundred famous views of Edo), in the section for Spring. One of two prints in the series copied in oils by Van Gogh in 1877. Daringly placed in the foreground is the Garyûbai (sleeping dragon plum). The branches of this famous tree spread underground and re-emerged in an area up to fifteen metres square. One guidebook to Edo described its double blossoms as 'so white when in full bloom as to drive off the darkness'. The tree was surrounded by a low fence to keep people from damaging it. It survived until it was fatally damaged in the great flood of 1910. This impression is from a later printing with simpler shading on the green ground and on the tree, resulting in less volumetric forms and less spatial recession. T.3449.
