Parchment, ii paper flyleaves + 207 fols. + ii paper flyleaves, 121 x 84 (66 x 46) mm, 14 long lines, ruled in red and brown ink. BINDING: 19th century, gold-tooled red leather over pasteboard, Dutch gilt endpapers. Production Place: Northern France & Flanders. c. 1460-1470. CONTENTS: fol. 1r ownership inscriptions (addition); fols. 1v – 2r shields of arms (addition); fols. 2v – 4v family register (addition); fols. 5v – 6r shields of arms (addition); fols. 7r – 18v Calendar; fols. 19r – 24v Gospel Sequences of Saints John, Luke and Matthew; fols. 25r – 34v Hours of the Cross; fols. 35r – 36r Gospel Sequence of St Mark; fols. 37r – 136r Hours of the Virgin; fols. 137r – 160v Penitential Psalms and Litany; fols. 162r – 198v Office of the Dead fols. 199r – 203v Suffrages; fols. 204v – 206r shields of arms (addition); fol. 207v ownership inscriptions (addition). DECORATION: Eighteen large framed miniatures [10 ll.] in semi-grisaille at major text divisions, with full floral borders including birds, animals, grotesques, angels, and hunting scenes on coloured grounds (except in Suffrages): fol. 19r Gospel Sequences, St John on Patmos, with eagle; fol. 21r St Luke writing, ox walking into room; fol. 23r St Matthew looking at pen, angel holding book; fol. 25r Hours of the Cross, Crucifixion; fol. 35r Gospel Sequence of St Mark, St Mark at desk, with lion; fol. 37r Hours of the Virgin, Matins, Annunciation with St Barbara and manuscript patron, Quieret arms with Wavrin surcharge in border; fol. 63r Lauds, Visitation; fol. 81r Prime, Adoration of the Child; fol. 90r Terce, Annunciation to the Shepherds; fol. 98v Sext, Adoration of the Magi; fol. 106r None, Presentation in the Temple; fol. 113v Vespers, Massacre of the Innocents; fol. 127r Compline, Flight into Egypt; fol. 137r Penitential Psalms, David penitent; fol. 162r Office of the Dead, Skeleton standing on tombstone in charnel-house, motto ‘remors de mors’ and two monograms joined with cord in border; fol. 199r Suffrages, St Barbara with manuscript patron kneeling in prayer, Quieret arms with Wavrin surcharge in border; fol. 200r St Mary Magdalene kneeling in prayer at foot of Cross; fol. 201r St Christopher carrying the Christ Child, with hermit. ORNAMENTATION: Gold initials [4 ll.] on black grounds beneath miniatures; gold initials [2 ll.] on black and brown grounds, accompanied by floral outer border (incorporating people, grotesques and animals); 1 l. gold initials on black and brown grounds; capitals highlighted in yellow; line-fillers in gold on black and brown grounds.
