  • Illuminated manuscript. Historiated initial from a Gradual. Production Place: Lombardy, probably Bergamo. Parchment, gold, 153 x 165 mm, two fragmentary four-line musical staves ruled in red ink and two fragmentary lines of text ruled in brown ink on reverse, circa 1470 to circa 1480. CONTENTS: On reverse, part of the Introit of the Mass for the feast of Saints Peter and Paul (29 June), which would have been introduced by the initial, N[unc scio vere, quia misit Dominus Angelum suum: et eripuit me d]e manu He[rodi]s et de [omni exspectatione plebis Judaeorum]. DECORATION: Historiated initial in pink on gold ground, formed of acanthus, containing a trumpeter standing within an architectural niche, and terminating in a male head: [N] Saints Peter and Paul holding books, papal keys and a sword.
