The lid was inlaid with silver piqué work. The silver parts of the box were soldered and the hinge was pinned to the base and mount. The tortoise shell lid was set into the mount. The top of the almost flat lid is decorated with a vignette of a man stretching into a palm tree beside which is a scroll inscribed 'CRESCIT SUB PONDERE'.
