Image attached to C.26-1927

An image of Bowl with cranes and clouds. Unknown, pottery probably, South Cholla province, Kangjin-gun, Sadang-ri kilns. This bowl is of conical shape with a concave base. On the outside it is plain, while the inside is carved in low relief with six motifs of clouds and cranes, and a chrysanthemum floret in the centre. The pale bluish-green glaze is glossy and crackled. The base shows three quartzite spur-marks. Stoneware, thrown, carved and celadon-glazed, height, whole, 6.1 cm, diameter, rim, 16.0 cm, diameter, foot, 4.5 cm, circa 1100-1200. Koryo Dynasty. Production Note: This kind of bowl was used for tea. Low-relief motifs of this kind are frequently seen on pieces from the latter part of the twelfth century. This piece is important as it shows that the inlaid crane-and-cloud motif developed from carved low-relief motifs at this time.
