The cup is of a truncated conical form with a harp-shaped handle. The circular saucer has a flat base and deep sloping sides.There is a small hole for suspension in the base of the saucer. Both pieces have a bleu lapis ground. On the cup there are two heart-shaped reserves framed by trellis work, flowers and foliage in gold, and painted in polychrome with two flying birds. In the reserve on the side away from a right-handed drinker, one bird carries a branch in its beak. The saucer has a circular reserve, similarly framed and painted in polychrome with two flying birds. (See Eriksen and de Bellaigue, 1987, p. 154, chart, no. 135, and p. 167, no. 135. But there is no evidence to confirm this. After 1758 a Y or y was used by Edme-François Bouillat, usually to the right of the factory mark. The incised mark '4' occurs frequently from 1753 on Vincennes and Sèvres porcelain in either an open or a closed form, (here it is almost closed). It also occurs on C.14 & A & B-1961, covered cup and saucer, 1756 and C.20.2-1961, jug, 1759. This form was made from at least 1752 when it was mentioned in the factory's stock inventory taken in October. It was made in two sizes, and some examples have a cover. The second size had been introduced by July 7 1753 when mentioned in the glost firing records. Earlier the same form appears to have been known as a gobelet à cuvier, i.e. tub-shaped. The sales records in 1753 record 'Goblet a la reine lapis oiseaux coloré' with saucers being sold at 36, 48 and 60 livres. This example bears the date letter A assigned in 1845 to 1753, more recently to late 1753/1754.
