Textile. Wall Hanging. Morris, William, designer (British, 1834-1896), Godman, Ada Phoebe, embroiderer (British. Wall hanging, of linen, with polychrome wool embroidery in 'Artichoke' pattern. Linen twill, embroidered in crewel wools in shades of cream, beige, pale, medium and dark brown, yellowish-brown, pale yellow, salmon pink, pale, medium and dark rose pink, pale, medium and dark green, pale medium and dark Prussian blue, pale blue, grey, and white with Artichoke design incorporating stylized artichokes, other flowers, and foliage. The borders are of oblique stripes, and the lower edge is fringed. Height (whole) 213.5 cm, width (whole) 983.6 cm, circa 1875-circa 1899. Arts and Crafts. Notes: The design of 1877 entitled 'Mrs Godman. Design for embroidered hanging (artichoke design)' is in the Victoria & Albert Museum (65-1898). This hanging and the other pieces which covered the walls of the room were worked by Mrs Godman over about twenty-five years.
