Netsuke. Inro/katabori. Unknown maker, Japan. netsuke. Lacquer inro. A four case inro with five divisions, of standard shape. The red lacquer ground and tsugaru nuri ground (red, yellow, green and black mottled lacquer) are diagonally divided and are decorated in gold, black and red hiramakie (low-relief sprinkled design), and takamakie (high relief sprinkled design). Depicting a herd boy, a basket of grasses on his back, holding the tether of a large black ox with another herd boy riding on the ox. The base and top surface are tsugaru nuri. The compartments and risers are nashiji (shimmering and spangles) with fundame (matt gold) shoulders and rims. Height 6.2 cm, width 5.1 cm, circa 1800-1899. Edo (Japanese period, 1615-1868).
