The style and subject of this Valentine is comparable with examples held by Grosvenor Prints, 19 Shelton Street, London WC2H 9JN [http://www.grosvenorprints.com/stock.php?keyword=Valentines&WADbSearch1=Submit&cat_id=21&cat_select=488] which are dated c.1870. The theme of the Valentine as a 'snake in the grass' is seen in another example: P.14345-R-52, which shows a male figure in the role.
