  <description>
    <value>Valentine card of cream laid paper, roughly 8vo size with a lithograph of black ink (uncoloured). A large, central image of three women, two wearing mob caps, dousing a gentleman with water and washing him with a mop in a large, wooden bath tub. A verse printed above and below: "You snivelling wretch of a lover give o'er / Your raptures and extacies [sic] all / For Betty and Sally my maids both have swore, / To give your ambition a fall. ...". The inside pages are blank. The Museum of London holds an example of this print in their collection (34.170/1006) and according to their records, it is a later reprint of an original by James Kendrew of York made around 1825 and one of a series of reprints published by Andrew Tuer of the Leadenhall Press for valentine manufacturer and collector, Jonathan King to sell to other collectors. They date it as 1860-1880. The Museum of London example is also reproduced in Frank Staff, _The Valentine &amp; Its Origins_ (1969), no. 50, p.50. The Fitzwilliam example is one of a series of cards on cream laid paper with uncoloured lithographs, apparently all later reprints and probably all with origins similar to those found at the Museum of London, mounted together in album P.14348-R.</value>
