An ornate sachet with embossed and gilt, lace-paper and central oval-shaped, gilt-framed panel decorated with a flower scrap with a mechanically operated convolvulus at the centre. When a paper rod is pulled upwards, the convolvulus is raised to reveal a printed greeting: 'A / Merry Christmas / and / a happy New Year'. A cut-paper chromolithographed butterfly is pasted to the verso of the convolvulus. A hand-written inscription in graphite is located on the album leaf to the right of P.14417-R-51: 'B. Sulman / 40 City Rd. / London E.C.'. The inscription presumably transcribes the maker's name from the verso, which was noted prior to mounting. The hand is not that of Glaisher.
