Islamic Minai bowl, Seljuk

An image of Islamic pottery. Minai/Minai'i ware. Production Place: Kashan, Iran. Find Spot: Gurgan. Shape: bi-conical bowl with a plain rim, sits on a foot ring. Interior: the rim is painted with a dentailated pattern in grey. On the neck a floriated kufic inscription is reserved in red, turquoise and grey. On the body a frieze of tear-drop medallions containing split palmettes reserved in turquoise alternate with arabesques reserved in grey and blue. The roundel on the base is enclosed by a further frieze of small medallions, containing palmettes reserved in green or grey, separated by red lozenges. Within the roundel, mounted on a blue horse, a rider wears a red and green robe and headdress; all encircled by a frond with red blue and turquoise leaves. Exterior: the rim is painted with a turquoise concentric line. On the body, a grey lozenge pattern, dotted with red and turquoise, encloses a kufic inscription floriated with red and separated by turquoise medallions containing red stylised birds. Glaze terminates unevenly on the foot ring. Fritware, wheel thrown, coated in white glaze painted in red, grey, blue, turquoise, flesh tones and black. Height, whole, 9.9 cm, diameter, rim, 20.2 cm, dimeter, base, 8 cm, 1170-1220. Seljuk. Iranian. Ades Family Loan.
