English Delftware tankard with a silver rim

Image attached to C.11-1931

An image of English Delftware. Tankard/Mug. Probably made at the Pickleherring pottery in Southwark. Cylindrical with an applied loop handle, concave on the outside. The front is painted with a cartouche enclosing the inscription ‘S.B/1659’, framed by scrolls, long sprays of paired leaves, and at the bottom, a cherub's head. The silver mounts round the rim and base have Van-dyked edges with studs above the points. The mount round the rim is wider than the other. Reddish-buff earthenware, thrown, tin-glazed, and painted in blue; the edges of the rim and base mounted in silver with zig-zag edging with studs over the points, height, whole, 22 cm, dated 1659. Commonwealth period. Baroque. Notes: In the Harland sale catalogue the initials were said to be those of a member of the Bayley family who were churchwardens at Avening, near Stroud, from 1677 onwards.
