Two sides are each built from a single piece of clay, the third formed from several pieces in a mix of angular and curving shapes. The surface is coated and painted with slips, with gestural marks and dots in white and brown over varied buffs. The decoration, mostly applied prior to fabrication, displays the physical marks of application. The underside is flat and unglazed.108referenceexhibition-1881adlib-exhibition-1881041780ec-cb10-38cf-b3c7-0790d1c36e8eLucie Rie, Hans Coper and Their Pupilsreferenceexhibition-1918adlib-exhibition-191835d13268-2fe6-3d1c-b58a-9b5fde2e9b9cChelsea Craft Fair 1986C.13-20171accession numberC.13-2017221633priref221633201720172017-04-20Entry Form Number1331urihttps://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/221633https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/221633handwritten signatureunderside of baseincisedAlison Britton / '86markreferenceagent-149638adlib-agent-1496387376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8The Fitzwilliam MuseumGiven by Ed Wolfreferenceagent-197953adlib-agent-1979536674ca0d-e3bc-346e-8a88-660508fb5e39Wolf, Ed201720172017-07-17given1986CE1986dated1986makerreferenceagent-173339adlib-agent-173339ba825901-3298-3c1b-8f1f-ae23881686ffBritton, AlisonAlison Britton (b.1948) is a leading British potter with an international reputation. She trained at the Central School of Art & Design and the Royal College of Art, where one of her tutors was Hans Coper. She has taught at the RCA for many years and is also well known as a curator, writer and lecturer. In the early 1970s, Britton played a significant part in the shift away from thrown, functional , studio ceramics towards more colourful, expressive, hand-built wares. In 1990 she was awarded an OBE in recognition of her services to the applied arts.Britton’s abstract, gestural mark making and painterly application of slips blurs the line between art and craft. In her own words: ‘ the improvised relationship between the painted surface and the irregular form is what continues to engage me”.referenceterm-109890adlib-term-109890825251c2-9904-34be-b6ab-c855347f224720th Century, Late#referenceterm-107700adlib-term-1077008f5360fb-b262-3ae9-8942-b81cc0e3e848Elizabeth IIreferenceterm-106216adlib-term-106216825b8379-ec94-388e-9a59-624e40c090d0literalEnglandEnglandcountryLondonreferenceterm-42861adlib-term-428615b368285-f1a8-3dcf-a5b2-637fd3c3956cearthenwareDepthcm23Heightcm41.5Widthcm26.5referencemedia-205023adlib-media-2050238993f359-eb6d-33d3-b206-f6149b347684jpegaa/aa37/c_13_2017_1_201708_adn21_dc2.jpg1heightpixels1025widthpixels78016857288472881imagejpegaa/aa37/mid_c_13_2017_1_201708_adn21_dc2.jpg1heightpixels657widthpixels50016857288472881imagejpegaa/aa37/c_13_2017_1_201708_adn21_dc2.jpg1heightpixels1025widthpixels78016857288472881imagejpegaa/aa37/preview_c_13_2017_1_201708_adn21_dc2.jpg1heightpixels329widthpixels25016857288472881image0media
