An image of Sugar basin and cover/sugar bowl and cover. New Hall Porcelain Factory, Staffordshire, New Hall. Painted underglaze in mazarine blue with vine leaves, bunches of grapes and tendrils, and gilded. Pattern no. ‘631’ painted in red. Oval with curved sides, and two strap handles which rise upwards before descending to join the lower part of the sides. Inside the top there is a ledge to support the cover. The oval cover rises steeply to the middle where there is a hole, covered by the oval conical knob. The sides of the bowl are decorated with pattern 631 comprising sprays of vine leaves, tendrils and bunches of grapes, and there are gold bands round the lower edge, the top, and the sides of the handles, which also have a longitudinal gold stripe. The cover is decorated en suite but with smaller sprays. It has a wide gold band round the edge and gold knob. Hard-paste porcelain moulded and painted under presumed lead-glaze in mazarine blue and gilded. Transfer-printed underglaze in cobalt blue, height, whole, 12.1 cm, length, whole, 18.8 cm, width, whole, 10.6 cm, circa 1800-1812.
