An image of Romilly: Head of an Infant. Epstein, Jacob (British, 1880-1959). Bronze, cast with highly polished surface On a tall oblong block of stone set at right angles is the head of a child wearing a 'cap', which covers the ears. The eyes are sunk deeply in the full face. Production Notes : Romily John (1906-86) was the son of the artist, Augustus John (1878-1961). This is the first of Epstein's three portraits of Romily as a child. It was conceived in 1907 and was cast in an edition of nine. Height (whole) 42.9 cm, width (whole) 16.1 cm, diameter (whole) 19.6 cm, height (head) 20.3 cm, width (head) 15.8 cm, diameter (head) 19.6 cm, area (base) 11.4 cm. 1907.
