An image of Textiles. Embroidered picture. Blake, William, possibly (British, 1757-1827). Butts, Mrs (English). Linen ground, with a picture of two hares. Erratic long and short stitch, stem stich with some couching, an example of 'needle painting'. It is mounted on a wooden stretcher; underside threads are seated with glue. Linen embroidered in shades of green, buff, pale brown, brown, and pale reddish-brown crewel wools with yellow silk. Height, stretcher, 58.75 cm, width, stretcher, 51.1 cm, circa 1790- circa 1800. Notes: 'Needle painting' is a form of free-style embroidery with erratic stitching attempting to imitate the techniques of painting.This example is believed to have been designed by William Blake, and worked by the wife of his friend, Thomas Butts.
