Flirting by a waterfall

Image attached to P.5-1955

An image of Flirting by a waterfall. Harunobu, Suzuki (Japanese, 1724-1770). Colour print from woodblocks. Chuban. Woodcut, circa 1767 to circa 1769. Ukiyo-e.
Notes: The poem on the man's fan reads: ‘Hiryu chokka sansen shaku (Straight down three thousand feet plunges the leaping torrent)’. The maple-leaves above show that it is Autumn, and the print may refer to the No play Momiji-gari (Maple-viewing) from which several dance episodes were adapted in the Edo period. In the earliest impressions the water was printed in blue. A later variation on the same design with the same poem is found in another print by Harunobu.
