Oriental bronzes. Chongbyong/kundika. Unknown maker, Korea. The long neck of the kundika flares out in the middle and terminates in a narrow faceted tube. The rounded body tapers towards the splayed foot. A well-proportioned filling spout is attached at the widest part of the vessel and has a flat hinged cover. The plain surface is patinated in places. Bronze, raised, with patination in places, height, whole, 41.2 cm, diameter, rim, 1.2 cm, diameter, foot, 9.8 cm, circa 1101-1200. Koryo Dynasty. Collection: Gompertz Collection. Notes: The kundika (chongbyong) was used as a pure-water sprinkler in Buddhist ceremonies. Some bronze examples are decorated with inlaid silver and similar vessels also exist in celadon (C.55-1984).
