Lustre ware bowl, Seljuk

An image of Islamic pottery. Bowl. Production Place: Kashan. Shape: shallow hemispherical bowl with an everted, flange rim. Sits on a high, flaring foot ring. Interior: on the rim script (or possibly pseudo-script) painted in lustre on a dotted ground and enclosed by concentric lustre bands. On the body two sketchily drawn, confronted figures wearing robes decorated either with large dots or scrolls reserved in lustre. In the background lustre dots and scrolls and two half palmettes are painted. Exterior: on the body scrolling, sketchy half palmettes are painted in lustre and framed above and below by concentric lustre bands. Glaze terminates on the exterior foot ring, where it covers the surface unevenly. Fritware, wheel thrown, coated in white glaze painted with lustre. 1200-1220. Seljuk. Lent by the Ades family.
