Christ preaching, by Rembrandt

Image attached to 23.K.5-98

An image of Christ preaching La petite tombe. Old man shading his eyes with his hand. Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669). Etching, engraving, drypoint, black carbon ink on laid paper, height, plate, 154 mm, width, plate, 206 mm; height, sheet, 156 mm, width, sheet, 207 mm, circa 1670-1770. Production Note: Only state. Impression without the burr. The blank area below Christ's feet overprinted with Rembrandt's 'Old man shading his eyes with his hand' (B259), by an unknown falsifier, probably in the eighteenth century. The overprinting must have been done before 1768, when the plate of the 'Old man' was bought by J. Trible and then completely reworked by Georg Frederic Schmidt. Notes: This is a later impression, after the heavy drypoint burr on the sleeve of the man in the left foreground was burnished away. The title 'la petit tombe' refers to a member of the La Tombe family, who probably commissioned the print. The overprinting of 'Old man shading his eyes with his hand seems likely to have taken place in the eighteenth century - a different falsification, with a superimposed head and dog from 'The strolling musicians' (B119) is in the British Museum. Alternative Number(s): Hollstein (Dutch/Flemish); B67 Only state; 1969. Biörklund/Barnard; BB52-2 Only state; 1955. Hollstein(Dutch/Flemish); B259 Only state. Biörklund/Barnard; BB38-3 Only state.
