Snuff box. Objets de vertu. Girl with basket of roses. Unknown maker, England, probably. Navette-shaped horn box with gold piqué work; the lid set with a miniature of a seated girl holding a basket of roses. Pointed oval (navette-shaped) with straight sides. The top of the flat lid is inlaid with a gold piqué wriggle work border; in the centre is a navette-shaped miniature in faded browns, blues and pinks depicting a seated girl, facing three-quarters left, wearing a hat and holding a basket of pink roses. The gold mount round the miniature, the hinge and the thumbpiece are engraved with bright cut borders. A vacant oval impressed cartouche in the base indicates some decoration is missing. Horn with gold mounts and inlaid gold piqué work; the lid set with a miniature painted in watercolour and bodycolour probably on card. Height, whole, 2.8 cm, length, whole, 9.5 cm, width, whole, 4.5 cm, 1780-1800.
