English band sampler, by Mary Derow

An image of Embroidery sampler/Band sampler. Derow, Mary. Three edges are hemmed and there is a selvedge at the bottom. The sampler is worked in horizontal bands of repeat border patterns, "boxers", coronets, an alphabet, numerals and inscriptions 'Mary Derow of the charity school of st.clements danes aged ten years begvn this sampleer avgust the twenty ninth anno dom 1723', ' he that giveth to the poor lendeth to the lord and his reward will be in heaven', ' be not wise in then own eyes fear the lord and depart from evil', 'a good name is better than preciovs ointment'. The bottom part of the sampler consists of detached motifs including a male and female figure, a large vase with stylized flowers, two urns with trees, and small birds. Linen embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, double running, satin and Algerian eye stitch with filling stitches. Three edges are hemmed and there is a selvedge at the bottom. Length 46 cm, width 23 cm, 1723. English.
