Image attached to MAR.C.65-1912

An image of Maiolica. Shallow bowl on low foot. Unidentified potter. This type of dish is traditionally attributed to Castel Durante, but could have been made in Urbino. A bust of a young woman, three-quarters to right, her gaze cast downwards to her right. Her blonde hair is dressed in a plait over the crown of her head. She wears a green and yellow turban embroidered with black scrolling foliage; two gold chains and a rope of beads; and a green dress with a yellow chemise showing on the shoulders. A scroll inscribed `LAVRA/BELLA' in blue projects on either side of her head. The background is blue. On the back are four concentric yellow bands: on the edge of the foot, just beyond the junction of the foot and bowl, and two round the rim. Pale buff earthenware, tin-glazed overall. Painted in blue, green, yellow, orange, cream, and black. Height, whole, 4.7 cm, diameter, whole, 22.7 cm, circa 1525-1535. Renaissance.
