Sculpture. Virgin and Child. Desiderio da Settignano, after (Italian, 1428-1464). Relief of the Virgin and Child, painted and gilt stucco. The half-length Virgin is shown in three-quarter view, in the act of praying over Christ Child. The Virgin has long, curly hair which flows behind her right shoulder. She is finely painted, and special care has been given to the decoration of her scarlet robe, veil and halo. The Christ Child, seen in profile, is sitting in front of his mother. He is dressed in a robe and a tall waist-belt and he is indicating the Virgin with his left hand, whilst clasping an end of the Virgin’s veil with his right hand. The halo of Christ Child is also finely decorated. The figures are set against a flat painted background. Stucco, painted and gilded, height, frame, 57.1 cm, width 43.4 cm, depth 7 cm, height, object, 52 cm, width 43.2 cm, depth 6.5 cm, circa 1450-circa 1460. Renaissance. Florentine School.
