The Immortal Rinnasei, by Yashima Gakutei

Image attached to P.263-1937

An image of The Immortal Rinnasei. Gakutei, Yashima (Japanese, 1786(?)-1868). Surimono. Colour print from woodblocks, with metallic pigment and blind embossing, circa 1824-circa 1826. Poetry by Kojuken Shikyo. Ukiyo-e. Notes: The Chinese poet Lin Ho-tsing, or Rinnasei as he was known to the Japanese, was a popular subject in Japanese art. He had no wish to leave his poems to posterity, and so never wrote them down. He was usually depicted with a crane beneath a plum tree, both symbols associated with New Year, for which most surimono were intended. The poem on this print says that the fragrance of the plum blossoms is deeper than the garden well from which he draws the first water of the New Year. The separation of the picture of the plum branch with the rising sun from the picture of the poet is intended to give the effect of an album page.
