Paperweight. Yashima (Japanese, 1786(?)-1868). Surimono. Colour print from woodblocks, with metallic pigment and blind embossing, circa 1820-circa 1823. Ukiyo-e. Poetry by Bunritsuen Kokin and Bunsaien Fudemaru. Notes: From the seven-sheet series Katsushika shichiban tsuzuki (Seven pictures for the Katsushika Group) which forms a continuous composition linked by the gold screen in the background. The silver tortoise held in her hand, together with the paintings of a tortoise and crane, were symbols of longevity appropriate for surimono intended for the New Year.
