A scene from Suehiro, by Totoya Hokkei

Image attached to P.355-1937

An image of A scene from Suehiro. Hokkei, Totoya (Japanese, 1780-1850). Surimono. Colour woodblock print with blind-embossing and metallic pigments. Late 1820s. Signed: Hokkei hitsu (as if on a handscroll), circa 1827- circa 1829. Ukiyo-e. Notes: This print is conceived as if a scroll is opening to reveal a view of Suehiro, a Kyogen (comic interlude) play, in which a dancing courtier is shielded by an umbrella held by a servant. In the play a master asks his servant to purchase a suehiro fan, but when he gets to town the servant is swindled into buying an old umbrella instead.
