Image attached to P.363-1937

An image of Quelling demons in Mount Ooe. Hokkei, Totoya (Japanese, 1780-1850). Surimono. Colour print from woodblocks, with metallic pigment, lacquer and blind embossing. c.1825-30. Poetry by Soramitsuya Maeda, circa 1825- circa 1830. Ukiyo-e. Notes: A red-faced demon is just about to clench his teeth into the armour of Watanabe no Tsuna, one of the four heroes led by Minamoto no Raiko to subjugate the demons dwelling in Mount Ooe to the north of Kyoto. Since the Middle Ages this demon-quelling story had appeared in a number of paintings, books and plays. The demon’s head was chopped off by Tsuna, only to fly off around the sky like a red-tailed comet, before returning, as in this print, to attack Tsuna again.
