Illuminated manuscript. Cutting. Leaf from a Dogeâs Commission. Master of the Trees (âMaestro degli Alberiâ). Parchment, gold, 211 x 142 mm, no text on verso, circa 1540 to circa 1550. Production Place: Italy, Venice. DECORATION: Full-page miniature in two compartments: above, the holder of the commission, kneeling, is presented to the Virgin and Child by his patron saint; below, Justice stands with sword and scales on a golden plinth supported by dolphins, flanked by Prudence and Temperance against a seascape, with two putti grasping ribbons which secure a shield of arms; the miniature is surrounded by a full floral border of gold sprays and grisaille flower heads on a brown ground.
