Huang Shikung and Chang Liang, by Yashima Gakutei

An image of Huang Shikung and Chang Liang. Gakutei, Yashima (Japanese, 1786(?)-1868). Surimono. Colour print from woodblocks, with metallic pigment and blind embossing, circa 1820- circa 1823. Ukiyo-e. Notes: From a series for an unidentified poetry club. This scene illustrates the story of Chang Liang (Choryo in Japanese), an historical figure in Han dynasty China, who was crossing the river I when an old man on a mule dropped his shoe. Chang picked it up and gave it back to the old man, who turned out to be the Taoist god Huang Shikung (Kosekiko in Japanese). After further tests, Choryo was duly rewarded. The story was popular in prints as an exemplar of the virtue of humility, although the roles in the story were often assigned to contemporary Japanese characters.
