  • Miniature. The Sandalwood Pavilion. Verso: Arabic calligraphy. Unknown miniaturist. Inscription(s): Above and below illustration; black ink; calligraphic inscription. Verso; black ink; calligraphic inscription. Bodycolour including white, with pen and ink and gold on paper, height 274 mm, width 166 mm, circa 1500. Persian. Notes: Leaf of the "Haft Paykar" or "Seven Portraits". (?) The legendary history of the King Bahram Gur. The seven portraits, representing seven princesses of incomparable beauty, were discovered by Bahram in a secret chamber. The king falls in love with these portraits and obtains the seven princesses in marriage, each one, representing one of the seven Climes, is lodged in a separate palace symbolically coloured, and Bahram visits them on succesive days. They each entertain him with a story in the manner of the "Arabian Nights". From an Manuscript of Nizami [formerly MS.327] [1].
