  • Illuminated manuscript. Cutting. Historiated initial from a Choir Psalter and Hymnal. Production Place: Italy, Umbria, Perugia. Parchment, gold, 136 x 139 mm, four fragmentary lines of text written on alternate lines, ruled in brown ink. Circa 1475 to circa 1480. CONTENTS: On reverse, fragmentary text from the Magnificat [boni]s et diui[tes dimisi]t inanes [suscepit I]srael puerum [suum recor]datus misercordie su[e]; the initial C probably introduced Ps. 115, Credidi, and would have been on the verso of the original leaf. ORNAMENTATION: Ornamental initial formed by an inner band of liquid gold and outer sections of solid colour combined with dense foliage with the same motifs used in the bowl of the letter: [C] painted on square grounds of solid blue with intricate white highlighting and scalloped edging in brown ink.
