  • Illuminated manuscript. Cutting from an Antiphoner for the Sanctoral. Parchment, gold, 345 x 243 mm, five musical staves ruled in red ink, four fragmentary lines of text, ruled in brown ink, circa 1325 to circa 1350. Production Place: Italy, Perugia. CONTENTS: On reverse, antiphons for the psalms of the first nocturn at Matins for the Feast of St Laurence [Noli me derelinquere pater sancte quia thesauros tu]os iam expendi quos t[radidisti mihi]. P. Quare[fremuerunt]. V. Quid in me [ergo displicui]t paternitati tue. An. [Non ego t]e desero, fili neque de[relinquo sed maiora tibi debentur pro fide] (continuing on the side with the initial) christi certamina. P. Domine [quid multiplicati]. uersiculi dicuntur de uno martyre. R. i. Leuita lau[rentius bonum o]pus op[eratus] est qui per signum crucis [caecos illuminavit]; the initial L, which would have been on the verso of the original leaf, introduced the responsory to the first lesson of Matins for the feast of St Laurence, Leuita laurentius. ORNAMENTATION: Ornamental initial in liquid gold and pink on blue and dark pink grounds with coloured vine-scroll infill and acanthus extensions forming partial borders: [L, 2-3 stave high]. Alternate red or blue initials [height of the gap between staves] with purple or red pen flourishing, using small scallop and trefoil motifs.
