The white envelope has an embossed design and is addressed in black ink in an unknown hand: 'Dr. Glaisher / Trinity College'. The truncated address and comical tone of the poem suggests that it was sent to Glaisher from a Cambridge friend or colleague who knew about his collection of valentines.
