  • Illuminated Manuscript. Cutting. Historiated initial from a Choir Book. Parchment, gold, 365 x 125 mm, three fragmentary four-line musical staves ruled in red ink and fragmentary words on three lines ruled in black ink on reverse. Production Place: Italy, Tuscany. Circa 1250 to circa 1299. DECORATION: Historiated initial [I, 3 ll.] in grey-blue outline on dark red ground extending into foliage and beasts at top and bottom, and twisted to form knotwork patterns, medallions enclosing six busts of prophets and Old Testament kings holding blank scrolls (except David playing harp) on either side, and five central qautrefoils set against diapered background and enclosing five days of Creation, ending with Adam and Eve.
