Midô Kampaku-dono no Inu. Gakutei, Yashima (Japanese, 1786(?)-1868). Surimono. Colour print from woodblocks, with metallic pigment and blind embossing (karazuri). Shikishi-ban. Signed: Gakutei. Circa 1827-circa 1829. Ukiyo-e. Notes: From the series of Spring kyôka surimono entitled Uji shûi monogatari (Additional tales from Uji) commissioned by the Ichiyô poetry circle led by Bumbunsha Kanikomaru. The title of this print refers to Fujiwara no Michinaga (966-1027), the most powerful man in Japan as chief advisor to the emperors. One day as he was about to enter a Buddhist temple, his dog tugged at the sleeve of his robe to prevent him walking over a cursed object buried by one of his enemies, thereby saving his life. The poem (with word-play in brackets) reads: ‘Spring breezes carry the scent of plum over the hedge [filling one’s sleeve] along narrow paths [dog runs] beside earthen walls.
