Stationery trolley, by Yashima Gakutei

Image attached to P.324-1937

An image of Stationery trolley. Gakutei, Yashima (Japanese printmaker, 1786(?)-1868). Surimono. Colour print from woodblocks, with metallic pigment and blind embossing. Early 1820s. Poetry by Bunkosha Funazumi and Bunchosha Hanabito. Circa 1820 to circa 1823. Ukiyo-e. Notes: From the seven-sheet series Katsushika shichiban tsuzuki (Seven pictures for the Katsushika Group) which forms a continuous composition linked by the gold screen in the background. The screen is decorated with paintings and poems signed by members of the Katsushika poetry group. The secondary name of each of the poets begins with the character bun (the symbol of the Katsushika group) which also (in a different pronunciation) forms the first character of the title of each print. This print shows a fuguruma, a small cart on which books and writing material were stored and transported.
