The inkstand is in the form of a rectangular chest with two circular holes in the top to take the cylindrical pounce pot and inkwell, and three smaller circular holes in each end. There is a low projection in front of the chest to accommodate the pens, and this has a pierced scrolling border across its width. All the circular apertures are outlined in white slip. the top of the chest and the top of the sides of the projection in front of it are spotted in slip, and on each side there is a painted slip plant spray which uses the three small circular holes as its berries. On the back there is a lozenge shape divided into four compartments with a spot in each, over which is a figure of eight with open ends and four horizontal spots behind them. The scrolls across the front are outlined in white slip, and the front of the chest is painted with the initials and date 'U:B: 1794'. The pounce pot and ink well are cylindrical with sloping sides and concave tops edged by a row of white spots and a line encircling the rim.The inkwell has one circular hole in the middle, and the pounce pot has a large number of holes.
