Parian bust of War (female), by J. Stephan

Image attached to C.1074-2016

An image of Bust. War (female). Stephan, J., manufacturer, England, Worcestershire. Stephan, J., sculptor. Inscription: maker's name; reverse of bust; marked; Made by J. Stephan for James Lane Worcester 1860 / By prmisn [sic] of RWB; RWB stands for R.W. Binns of Kerr & Binns of Worcester. Parian (porcelain), slip-cast, height, 32 cm, length, 14.3 cm, width, 12.3 cm, length, base, 10.3 cm, 1860. Production Note: From a brief record in the Museum of Worcester's archive, for an 'oven plaque' made in 1857, it appears that James Lane was probably the manager of a firm in London, which had contacts with Kerr and Binns of Worcester. The RWB in the inscription stands for R.W. Binns. J. Stephan may have been a modeller or independent producer in Worcester, as his name is not recorded at the factory. The 'Worcester' in the inscription would therefore refer to the location of Stephan rather than Lane, but this is uncertain.Acquisition Credit: Accepted by H. M. Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax from the estate of G. D. V. Glynn, and allocated to the Fitzwilliam Museum.
