Book. Ehon mushi erami. A collection of crawling creatures. Utamaro, Kitagawa (Japanese, c.1756-1806). Two-volume collection of kyÃ´ka verse with 15 illustrations by Utamaro. Printed in colours from woodblocks, with applied mica and blind embossing. Published by Tsutaya JÃ»saburÃ´, Edo (Tokyo), 1788. Japanese. Ukiyo-e. Notes: This book of kyÃ´ka (comic verse) is illustrated with exquisitely subtle and finely printed designs of flowers, insects and other creatures. The postscript is by Utamaroâs teacher Sekien: âMy discipleâs present volume, a collection depicting insects in nature, contains such paintings that were first painted in the artistâs heart... Even as a child, Utamaro had a fine awareness of the world around him. For fun, he would try to catch fireflies or capture crickets and grasshoppers that he would allow to move about freely on his outstretched palm as he observed them, completely engrossed'.
