  • Illuminated manuscript. Cutting. Initial from a Gradual. Production Place: Italy, Umbria. Parchment, gold, 149 x 120 mm, two musical staves ruled in red ink, three fragmentary lines of text ruled in brown ink, areas of erasure at each corner. Circa 1250 to circa 1275. CONTENTS: On reverse, part of the Introit, Gradual and Office for the Vigil of Saints Peter and Paul, [Caeli] enara[ant] glo[riam Dei et opera ma]num eius an[nuntiat firmamentum] Gloria. LIX. Graduale. In omnem terram. Offertorium. Michi autem nimis; the initial on the recto would have introduced the Introit for the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, Nunc scio vere quia misit dominus angelum (Acts 12:11), and would have been on the verso of the original leaf. DECORATION: Historiated initial in orange with scrolling foliate extensions on a shaped ground of solid blue with white stars: [N] St Peter. ORNAMENTATION: On reverse, traces of a blue initial with red pen flourishing, the height of width between staves; initials to Graduale and Offertorium highlighted in red; on recto, red letter following the historiated initial; guides to rubricator.
