Illuminated manuscript. Cutting. Leaf from a Choir Psalter. Production Place: Italy, Lombardy, probably Brescia. Parchment, gold, 470 x 342 mm (355 x 255 mm), two musical staves ruled in red ink, 11-13 lines of text, ruled in pale brown ink, early ink foliation 82 at lower right hand corner of verso (originally the recto of the leaf). Circa 1450 to circa 1475. CONTENTS: On reverse, the Wednesday Matins hymn Rerum creator optime, antiphons, on recto, Ps. 52: 1-4, Dixit inscipiens [sic] in corde tuo â¦ qui faciat, from the Matins office of Wednesday; the initial [D] introduces Ps. 52. DECORATION: Historiated initial in graded pink, green and liquid gold on square grounds, extending to form partial foliate borders with spray-work and fruit and flower motifs: verso, Blue penwork initials [2 ll.] with extensive red pen flourishing using voided foliate motifs. Alternate red and blue one-line verse initials with purple or red pen flourishing; text immediately following the historiated initials and the verse initials is written in display script, flourished in black filled with yellow wash.
