Islamic Fritware tankard and cover

Image attached to C.17 & A-2009

An image of Fritware (stonepaste)/ tankard and cover. Tankard: around the rim an alternating horizontal frieze of black dotted diagonal crosses, divided by polychrome vertical lines and mounds with sprouting flowers. On the body vertical friezes of stylised polychrome floral sprays are separated by yellow vertical lines from winged, highly stylised angels’ heads. The handle is painted with a vertical frieze of semi-circles in alternating colours. The underside is glazed, with three spur marks clearly visible resulting from use of a tripod stacking device in the kiln. Cover: two concentric friezes of polychrome stylised floral sprays, the lower incorporating ‘saz’ leaves. Decoration differs from that on the tankard, which may suggest that the cover belonged originally to a different vessel. Glaze covers underside. Fritware, wheel thrown with elements hand made or carved. Finely potted, painted in red, blue, purple, yellow, black and green under a clear, crazed glaze. Height, tankard, 12.3 cm, height, cover, 5.9 cm, width, whole, 14.2 cm, diameter, rim, 10 cm, diameter, rim, 10.5 cm, diameter, base, 10.2 cm, weight, whole, 476 g, circa 1700-1799. Ottoman. Islamic pottery. Anatolia, Kutahiya, Kütahya.
